hanami

The sakura rise and fall with dignity, like the samurai.
The sakura blooms are a short beautiful life.
The graceful sakura embody the spirit of a culture.
They're a moment to get drunk and sing pop songs.
Whatever metahpor you choose, they're plain beautiful.

Today, I wandered through many parks and paths, searching for sakura in full bloom; I found them in quiet corners, at boisterous temples, along palace walls, and arching over rivers. My feet are tired, and my camera is on the verge of permanent blindness, but it was a beautiful day. Here are some photos from the walks and from the weekend.

Inokashira park, not yet fully bloomed.

Wadaburi park. This park follows a canal,
which I thought was a river.
It's much uglier than it seems
from these pictures.

The suits come out to drinky at yasukuni shrine.

Chidorigafuchi, the walking path
along the west moat of the palace.

Looking good! We're still waiting for the sakura down here. I liked your line comparing them to the samurai.

Man, I always thought Yasukuni was a bit out of the way and rarely attended, but it always looks packed in your photos. I guess ultra-nationalism is alive and well. :(

Yeah, I've got a new appreciation for the sakura this year. About a minute up the street is chidorigafuchi, which is the best viewing place I've seen. I go in the mornings when the air is fine and the crowds are thin.
Yasukuni is just up the street, too. It's an alright place to go ride the bicycle, and there's the biggest torii I've ever seen at the end of the promenade. I'd say a nice place in an otherwise grey neighbourhood. The yasukuni grounds are where I saw a woman bite a live snake in half too... Good festivals!
